Hiring plans for a new Global Capability Centre often begin with role counts. Those numbers matter, but they are more useful when tied to a clear view of what the centre is expected to deliver and how it will work with the wider organisation.
Build the plan from capability outward: identify the work, the skills and leadership needed to make that work effective, then phase hiring to match the centre’s mandate.
Start with the work to be done
Break the mandate into activities and outcomes. Map the roles and specialist skills required, the tools the team will use, and the people in other locations who will provide inputs or approvals. This makes the capability gap easier to see than a broad request for a certain number of hires.
Establish local leadership and clear ownership
Identify who will set priorities, represent the centre to business stakeholders and support its people. Local leaders need clear decision rights and direct working relationships with the teams that rely on the centre.
Make accountability explicit across locations. Teams should know who owns a deliverable, who reviews it and how issues move to the right decision-maker.
Prioritise skills that unlock the mandate
Separate must-have skills for initial delivery from capabilities that can be developed or added later. Consider technical depth alongside communication, problem-solving and collaboration with global stakeholders. The balance will depend on the work the centre is taking on.
Design the employee experience
Think about onboarding, manager support, learning opportunities, career paths and ways to share knowledge with colleagues in other locations. A centre becomes more connected when people understand how their work contributes to the wider business.
Review the plan as the centre evolves
Use regular workforce and delivery reviews to check where demand is changing, which skills are scarce and whether current roles are producing the intended outcomes. Update hiring priorities as the centre takes on new work.
When capability, leadership and work are planned together, hiring becomes part of a business plan rather than a standalone target. Talk to GCC Makers about shaping your capability roadmap.
